Small Business Grant Scheme 2021

Nobody could have anticipated COVID-19.  Businesses have had to navigate severe disruption which is why Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is committed to encouraging the strength and vitality of its local economy.

The ‘Business Matters’ grant is intended to make a positive contribution towards business growth in the borough, promoting local entrepreneurship, business innovation and employment growth.

The grant can be used for anything that you feel would support the growth of your business including:

  • Test trading a product or service
  • Expanding into a new market
  • Diversifying into a new product area
  • Promoting a new product or service
  • Buying equipment or tools to improve efficiency, or to launch a new business
  • Producing a prototype
  • Adapting your business following the pandemic

Low Carbon Workspaces

Grants of up to £5k for Energy Efficiency

Projects in Hertfordshire
Low Carbon Workspaces (LCW) are offering grants of up to £5,000 to help SMEs in Welwyn Hatfield
to subsidise the cost of upgrading equipment to improve energy efficiency, lower energy bills, and
improve the overall quality of their premises. Grants are available to help fund up to a third of the
cost of energy saving projects such as, equipment upgrades, heating and cooling upgrades,
Insulation, glazing, and solar panels.

The programme has already awarded grants to more than 200 businesses in Hertfordshire, including
to Stickleback Fish Co who used a LCW grant to install modern efficient condensers reducing their
energy bills by 50%.

Additional Restrictions Grant 

Additional Restrictions Grant scheme reopens and will be providing additional support to the following eligible businesses:

  • Businesses that continue to be affected by government restrictions after the 19 July 2021, and specialist suppliers to these businesses.  We are aware that the travel industry has suffered and will give consideration to such businesses. 
  • The hospitality and events sector and suppliers to these businesses, that can demonstrate a continued high-level reduction in turnover.
  • Businesses which can demonstrate that they have not been eligible for government support and have suffered a significant reduction in trade.  

The grant will result in a one-off payment for eligible businesses and the total value of grants paid will be limited to the funding available.  We will devise a further phase to the scheme should funding remain available.
